She is the second black woman ever given this title by the magazine. The first after nine years.
Halle Berry was given the coveted title in 2003.
As Beyonce graces the front cover of this month’s issue of People, comments from blog site, Jezebel, expressed their displeasure of the event.
One commentor said, “Beyonce doesn’t really “count.” She’s black but not black.”
Another one said, “… this isn’t a cause for celebration, as People is simply upholding the status quo that has long existed in mainstream celebrity – elevating the most watered-down looking Negress(es) as “beautiful” while ignoring/denigrating any Black woman that is actually/looks like the product of two Black parents. ”
What do you think? Is People only choosing Black women who are “watered-down” as the commentator phrased it?
