Disney’s First Latina Princess

Disney’s commitment to diversity has received backlash recently after introducing a Latina princess character.

The new Disney Princess Sofia is supposed to be Latina. However, critics say the character doesn’t appear to be or isn’t Latina enough.

Her skin tone doesn’t reflect a Latin complexion and the actress that voices the character is caucasian. “Modern Family’s” Ariel Winter voices Sofia.

“Sofia the First” is a Disney television movie that will debut on November 18. The story is set in a fictional land. It focuses on Sofia’s life when her mother marries the king of Freezenberg.

This isn’t the first time Disney received criticism for their efforts. In 2009, the “Princess and the Frog” featured an African-American princess named Tiana. However, controversy surrounded the character when it was released after Hurricane Katrina and the backdrop for the story was set New Orleans. Not to mention undertones of voodoo in the movie.

As for Princess Sofia, some applaud Disney’s efforts for creating the first Latina princess.
