Miss Universe Canada disqualified 23-year-old Jenna Talackova because she was born a male.
Denis Davila, National director of Miss Universe Canada told the Toronto Star that contestants must be a “naturally born female.” He pointed out that Talackova wrote on her registration form that he was born female. After revealing she was born male, the organization disqualified her from the competition.
According to a statement released by Miss Universe Canada, Talackova “she did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form. We do, however, respect her goals, determination and wish her the best.”
Talackova was born a male, but realized she was a female at age 4. She started hormone therapy at 14 and undergone reassignment surgery at 19.
She is now consulting a lawyer regarding the issue.
