Houston police fatally shot a wheelchair-bound man who suffered from schizophrenia.
Police say he threatened people with a pen at a group home where he was staying.
Brian Claunch lost an arm and a leg in an accident and had been living in the group home. Police were called Saturday after when Claunch began acting aggressively after his caretaker refused to give him a cigarette and soda.
The suspect was asked to drop what he was holding, to stay still, and to cooperate with police. However, the suspect continued to threatened police and others.
Authorities say that the man held a pen and moved towards the officer’s partner. He cornered him with his wheelchair where the officer couldn’t get out.
When he wouldn’t stop advancing towards his partner, Officer Matt Marin, fired his weapon at the suspect.
Claunch was shot once and died at scene.
Officer Marin had been involved with a shooting before. In October 2009, he shot and killed a man who stabbed his girlfriend and neighbour.
After Claunch’s shooting, Marin had been place on administrative leave.
