French terror suspect is dead

After a 30 hour seige, the suspect died after the police raided his apartment, the French interior minister said.

Mohamed Merah exchanged fire with police as they entered the apartment. Just before the raid, police set off sporadic blasts throughout the night in an attempt to force Merah to surrender. However, the man did not give up.

During the raid, Merah jumped from the window and continued to shoot from the ground until he was killed. Three policemen were injured during the raid.

Mohamed Merah killed three Jewish children, a rabbi, and three French paratroopers in separate incidents over the last two weeks. Police believe that the killings were inspired by Islamic radical ideology.

According to French authorities, Merah admitted that he went on a killing spree to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and to protest the French army’s involvement in Afghanistan.
