An 80-year-old grandmother defended herself from thieves by throwing mangoes.
Otilia Martins was visiting her son-in-law’s store in New Bedford, Massachussetts when two thieves entered the store. One of the men pointed a gun at the cashier.
Although Otilia Martins was pistol whipped by one of the men she fought back.
Her son-in-law, Manuel Noguiera, who owns the store, was outside when the incident happened.
Noguiera told Boston.com that Martins looked in her pocketbook for something to throw at the thief.
“She didn’t find anything, but the fruit was right next to her, so she used that.”
Martins threw mangoes at the thieves until they left. She suffered a gash on her forehead from the pistol and later treated by paramedics on site.
The thieves were able to leave with $500 even with Martin fighting them off.
However, Noguiera was able to catch one of them two blocks away.
The other man fled to an apartment nearby.
Both suspects were arrested and will face charges of armed robbery, carrying a dangerous weapons, and assault and battery on a person over the age of 60.
