A landlord turns the tables on anti-abortion protestors.
Todd Stave leases a part of his building to an abortion clinic. We all know that where there are abortion clinics, there are also anti-abortion protestors outside of it.
The building owner used to leave the protestors alone since he believes that that is their first amendment right. However, as soon as the peaceful protest hit home, Stave soon decided that it was time for payback.
Anti-abortionists started harassing Stave at his home. The harassment started last fall when a group showed up at his daughter’s school. One during the first day of school and another during a back-to-school night. The signs they held displayed Stave’s name, contact information, and gruesome images of the fetuses.
Soon, calls started coming into his home at all hours. Stave’s peaceful demeanor quickly changed. He gathered support from his friends and started to take down information on the people who made the unwanted calls. He passed the information to his friends and asked them to call the harassers back.
“In a very calm, very respectful voice, they said that the Stave family thanks you for your prayers,” he said. “They cannot terminate the lease, and they do not want to. They support women’s rights.”
It started out with a few of his friends and it eventually grew. He soon organized Voice of Choice which has more than three thousand volunteers. They offer to make calls on behalf of people who are being bullied by anti-abortion protestors. The bullied include doctors, landlords or their families.
“We gave them back what they gave us, ” Stave said.
However, Stave and his group has guidelines that they follow regarding who they will make calls for. If protestors are just holding up signs outside of the clinic he won’t help them. If protestors start to personally harass individuals and their families, Voice of Choice will step in.
At one point, a Stave harasser who calls once will get bombarded with 5000 calls back from his supporters.
As Voice of Choice increasingly becomes successful, wouldn’t you think the protestors would learn their lesson? Apparently, not.
According to Stave, Anti-abortionists took advantage of a time he had to leave for San Francisco to accept an award for his involvement in Voice of Choice. His harassers went to his neighborhood and gave out fliers with a photo of him in a Nazi uniform including photos of Holocaust victims and bloody fetuses. It also had Stave and his family’s contact information.
A few days later, a protestor went to Steve’s brother-in-law’s dental clinic and began protesting outside. Stave, who was already back from his trip, confronted the protestor and the person replied back, “How was your trip to San Francisco?”
How ridiculous is that? Perhaps these protestors should do something more productive with their time…… like advocating for safe and affordable health care for families.
Instead they chose to rally against a landlord, a school, and at a dental clinic which has nothing to do with abortion.
