A Utah man brought a rifle to a J.C. Penney department store to prove that guns can be safe in the hands of law-abiding citizens.
Shoppers at a J.C. Penney in Riverdale saw a man walking around with a rifle slung around his chest. He also had extra ammunition and a sidearm holter on his right hip. One shopper, Cindy Yorgason, took photos and posted them on Facebook where the images immediately went viral.
Yorgason believes that the man “was the in the wrong place and shouldn’t be doing this at this location.”
However, Yorgason says she did not feel threatened by the man with the rifle.
The man is Utah resident, Joseph Kelley who is 22 years old. He was carrying an unloaded AR-15 rifle and a Glock 19C handgun, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
Kelley told the Tribune, that he brought the guns to J.C. Penney to demonstrate that guns are not dangerous if the person is a law-abiding citizen.
“I felt no negative vibes from anyone,” he told the Tribune. “I think it went rather surprisingly well.”
Kelly also said that he carries firearms so that he can protect children and others from “criminals, cartels, drug lords” and other “evil men.”
Many pro-gun advocates have openly carried firearms since Obama’s push for strict gun control laws to demonstrate that guns are safe.
