Grade 6 students at a Michigan middle school are upset about a homework assignment. The assignment made them feel embarrassed of their heritage.
“I was asked to dress like a slave and talk like a slave…” 11-year old Taylor said. He felt humiliated about the requirements of the assignment. Jordan Beer, a friend of Taylor, also received the same assignment. He felt the same way about this assignment and feared that it would hurt his mother as well.
Parents of the students want their children to fail this homework as the school refused to give the students a different assignment. Taylor’s mother claims that the principal told her that African children should learn where they came from.
The school district superintendent would not comment on the issue.
