Another teenager committed suicide because of social media bullying.
Jessica Laney hung herself on Sunday. Friends say that “bullying through social media played a major role,” according to WPTV.
Laney spent a lot of time on Tumblr and Ask.fm like most teenagers nowadays. In one of the sites, people ask about your sex life and post comments on how ugly you are. Most of these people post anonymously.
Comments like “Can you kill yourself already?” and “Nobody even cares about you” are common in these sites.
Friends and family created a Facebook memorial page for the Jessica.
“…last night, my friend Jessica Laney took her life. She was constantly bullied and bullied. And she was pushed and pushed to the point where she couldn’t handle it anymore. And if you could spread the word about the website ask.fm, & how it needs to be shut down, that would be amazing too. Ask.fm is a website where people can ask anonymous questions to anyone they want. And thats how Jessica was constantly put down and bullied. She was a beautiful girl & everyone loved her. Shes gonna be missed. We have to put an end to bullying. Please help…”
We are hearing more and more of these incidents lately. It is disturbing that nothing has been done to alleviate this problem.
My question is, do you think getting rid of these sites would help reduce this problem? How should kids be educated about the dangers or the consequences of their actions online?
What do you think?
