The Volkswagen hover car is an idea that stemmed from the “People’s Car Project” in China. The company encouraged customers to give design ideas for Volkswagen’s model of the future.
According to the video released on Youtube, the hovercraft uses electromagnetic levitation to float just above regular roads. It features distance sensors to help avoid collisions with other vehicles.
The vehicle seats two people and uses a joystick to maneuver its way through streets and into parking lots. It can move back-and-forth and side-to-side as well as spin on an axis. Oh, did we forget to mention that it produces zero emissions?
Other ideas from the “People’s Car Project” were also presented by Volkswagen at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show. However, the hover car concept was the one that caught people’s attention.
Volkswagen Director of Marketing Luca de Meo said that the ideas collected from the project marked a new era.
“We are no longer just building cars for, but also with customers and at the same time initiating a national dialog which gives us a deep insight into the design preferences, needs and requirements of Chinese customers,” de Meo said during the event.
